My research involves using microphone arrays for the detection and recognition of tonal sounds produced by different bird species This technology will allow us to better understand the activity of birds, and to contribute new knowledge in terms of both engineering and the natural environment Q2: Why did you choose Tokyo Tech? I chose Tokyo Tech because it places great importance on international exchanges, and because it provides an outstanding environment to carry out research There are also plenty of opportunities to join academic conferences both in Japan and overseas, which I very much enjoy Q3: How do you envision your future? -I would like to work in the field of artificial intelligence, and to utilize my knowledge and experience in this field to help develop the world into a better place

Nanaho Kawata Master’s student Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Q1: What are you working on at the moment? I am conducting research on the improved performance of electric motors and electric generators With the use of electric cars gradually increasing, our aim is to bring down costs and to improve performance by making electric cars more economical even over longer distances I am currently researching how to improve the torque, output power, and efficiency of motors Q2: Why did you choose the Dept of Electrical and Electronic Engineering? Whether it is small items like smartphones or massive power transmission facilities, electricity is central to modern society, and expectations regarding its use continue to rise

When I entered Tokyo Tech, I did not have a clear idea of what I wanted to do I wanted to take a broad perspective on my studies so I can discover my true passion That is why I chose the Dept of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Q3: How do you envision your future? -By utilizing the knowledge I accumulate here, I aim to become an engineer who applies a dimensionless approach to creating positive societal impact! I study it not just in class, but also in my student club, where we develop various types of software We participate in all kinds of competitions, and we were recently awarded 1st place by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry at a crisis management contest We want as many people as possible to know the joys of programming, and so we also hold workshops for middle and high school students Q2: Why did you choose the Dept of Information and Communications Engineering? I always wanted to be a programmer, and so I chose Tokyo Tech, which is also the alma mater of the late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata

I am currently examining the use of digital technology in the assessment of organizational capacity Specifically, I am researching methods used by businesses to evaluate capacity with technologies like the Internet of Things and social network services, and how this capacity can be boosted further Q2: Why did you choose the Department of Industrial Engineering and Economics? I wanted to study science and technology-related courses like statistics and information technology, but also fields such as management and economics in order to acquire a broader, more interdisciplinary point of view
