News Conference: Northern Kentucky vs Texas Tech – Postgame

THE MODERATOR: Day {vee} {dei} more and {gaiter} cull {veer} will represent the stowed {r} student body for Texas text Coach Beard is the he'd coach

We'll ask him to make a statement on the game and have questions for all three members of Texas Tech up here for 12 minutes Chris, please CHRIS BEARD: I want to congratulate northern Kentucky on a great championship season So much respect for their program In preparation I always like to watch a couple games and get my own kind of views then start calling people and getting people's opinions

The first time I saw them they play really hard and have a identity They guard hat a high level and play really hard on offense and cut {an} move and sure enough when I started talking to people around the country about Northern Kentucky those things came up Any team that has an identity like they do, a championship program, so much respect for mid majors that have championship seasons, didn't have then have to win that one game to get into the tournament We were fortunate enough to do it at Little Rock I've always had a huge respect for them

For our guys, we came here, it's a four team tournament We're trying to win two games in three days The first game of the tournament is always the toughest Just really proud of our guys tonight an our team effort I thought we won this game as a team

THE MODERATOR: Questions for any of the red raiders Q Coach, you were able to hold drew McDonald to five points that Was obviously a key for you {tobies} today CHRIS BEARD: He's a {phac} player

I think he can play in any league in the country He was definitely one of the main focal points of our game plan He has the ability to score inside and out and he's a great pass serve So, I would think from their point ever view he had some good looks today that he didn't make That's basketball

So we were fortunate but I think you give our guys credit We were dialed in We knew how special he was and I just congratulations to him, too, on a {phac} season BY CHRIS BEARD: CHRIS BEARD: Let's do this like the loan star rush Have you got any questions? Q

{Daf} individual {dei}, do you want to talk about what y'all do to keep him from doing as much for N K U? {Mod} for who Q Coach or players, either one {(Mark)} {(Mark)}? JARRETT CULVER: I mean he's a great player He

We just focused in on {hi} we watched a lot of film on him Tried to keep him from being in the lane a lot tonight We focus on defense and we focus on personnel a lot so I just felt like we did a great job on there tonight {(Mark)} {(Mark)} {(Mark)} {(Mark)}

Q For you, coach, seemed like they had a pretty good defensive scheme for your guards, especially in the first half Did you say anything or make any adjustments in the locker room that enabled your {reds} guards to {gelt} freed up a little more in the second half? CHRIS BEARD: Yeah First give them a lot of credit He can really coach

I saw him make adjustments all year in games so you don't win that many games and championships without knowing what you're doing In these turn games with this much time to prepare you kind expect the unexpected Takes both teams a little bit of time to get their feet under them I think in the second half more than any big a {jumplet} we just want to stay aggressive We thought in the first half we played well offensively, we couldn't make a free throw and we had tomorrow turnovers

Really kind of staying consistent with our original game plan with just an emphasis of getting a little bit more aggressive Q {Gaiter}, after the one game stay in Kansas city for the Big 12 what was the point of emphasis with this team leading into the NCAA Tournament? JARRETT CULVER: We just wanted to focus on us Put that behind us, learned and burned We just focused on us, details, how we got so far and how we made a run in the Big 12 and how we got to the March Madness tournament much I felt like we focused on this all weekend

We did a great job on that BY CHRIS BEARD: CHRIS BEARD: I have a question for more recently, I noticed you back there and got a glass of water and didn't get eyes I've always wondered I went to Europe and what's the whole idea of no ice? DAVIDE MORETTI: Well, the water is already cold so I don't need any other ice to get it colder laughter THE MODERATOR: Anything else for Texas Tech? Q Coach, after your {fir} side Chattanooga yesterday the world wants to know did anybody take you up on your offer to stay in coach Adams room last night? CHRIS BEARD: I can't confirm or deny that

I really try to stay away from MAC Adams on the days of games He's kind of intense, borderline moody We're fortunate to win a game in the NCAA Tournament These are so hard to win so that we'll celebrate for 30 minutes and within my 30 minutes I'll ask coach Adams that and get back to you guys the next time we're altogether THE MODERATOR: Anything else? All right

Gentlemen, {thraw} very much Q {Daf} {va} day, overall impressions of the game, you know, taking the experience from last year you guys are sophomore, second year here at the NCAA Tournament What are some of your thoughts about today {e} {o} win? DAVIDE MORETTI: Me and the {gaiter} and all the guys were here last year, give advice to the new guys and try to lead the team since the first minute and you know I think we did a pretty good job even we had too many turnovers in the first minutes but overall I think we kind of lead the way pretty good CHRIS BEARD: Thank you

THE MODERATOR: Okay Good luck on Sunday THE MODERATOR: Northern Kentucky is with us now, Tyler sharp and Dan {tees} {wail} ton represent the student body for the Norse Head coach is John {bran} understand We're going to ask John for a statement on the game and go to questions for all three members of the Northern Kentucky crew

John, please JOHN BRANNEN: Obviously want to congratulate Texas Tech They're everything they're contracted up to be in terms of defensively I did have concerns on ability to score {dha} that showed up {da} physicality

I was hoping we get to the full line more in terms of {crieferg} the basketball {Wre} weren't able to do that at all Their physicality just kind of put us in situations that we weren't comfortable with and then we just didn't shoot the ball well Five of 22 Two of our leading scorers were 4 of 25

It happens I told our guys I apologize, I wish I could have put them in some better situations to be able to assist with that That being said 26 and 9, you sit up here as a mid major school with an opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament and continue to advance 15 seed, 14 seed this year You know, I couldn't be more proud of our young men and for what they've accomplished

NCAA Tournament is all about matchups I felt like we had a few other {mooch} upset that would favor us a little bit better than tonight's {d} I think that came to fruition We'll continue to put ours ins position The guys to my left here were amazing night tonight and the have been all season

We We won't define ours by one game We're 26 and 9 What they've accomplished the last three years has never been done in the history of basketball Couldn't be more proud of them and we'll get better from this and we'll continue to put ours ins position to be sitting up here answering questions in the NCAA Tournament

Q Coach, very tight game at halftime Then it opened up there a little bit in the second half What was the key difference for tech being able to break it autopsy a little bit in? JOHN BRANNEN: We really defended if the first half despite struggling offensively In the second half those struggles offensively carried over to the defensive which I was concerned about

The gaps — listen, cull {veer} is an NBA player, okay He's {gob} to the in the N NBA The gaps he had opened up a great deal for him in the second half because we were in the same position we were in the first half because of frustration, fatigue, maybe, physicality and at let take {sism} they bring to the table as a high major school is impressive Come bin combination ever those {dwo} things

Q John, a follow-up on cull {veer}, his activity driving to the basket, 3 point shooting, assisting He accounted for 38 of the first 57 points How much of a handful was he if you could action {spanned} on that, please? JOHN BRANNEN: I don't know what else to say Else a tough matchup

He can put the wall on floor and score We wanted to neighboring him a pass serve Wanted to have him have a high assist night He had 7 assists We didn't think that's what he did well

Q John looked like drew hit a couple shots early on that he ordinarily makes in and out Were those the {cintd} of shots that need to go in for you guys {tf} a chance? JOHN BRANNEN: Those shots got to be to go in for us to be in position Any 14, 3 upset that you'll have in the tournament guys are going to make shots We were 5 for 22

Q Tyler, they were approaching double figures in blocked shots {da } did their interior presence make you hesitate in attacking inside? TYLER SHARPE: I don't know if it necessarily made it {hues} take it I know for sure that they affected a lot of shots even the ones they {dpt} block They have some long athletic guys that can get up and make shots very tough and do a good job ever going straight up without following

I think it they affected a lot of shots and floaters and finisheses if the rim we usually make were getting altered a little bit which hurt our percentage Q With {drew} the way they were shoot being, {smis}sing some shots What was your mindset like being the guy that was putting the ball in the basket? TYLER SHARPE: Just had the same mindset I come into every game {w} we rely on {drew} a lot

He's led under the circumstances his whole season and career I {dnlt} feel like I had to necessarily take his role because we trust him even if he's missed every shot, we trust he's going to make the next one THE WITNESS: I took what the defense gave me and basically just had the same approach I always have Q Coach, did you anticipate Texas Tech's points ever {fame} analysis on stopping {drew} McDonald? JOHN BRANNEN: Yes

Q Dan {tees}, you had a pretty great rebounding game Do you want to explain the confidence that you kept throughout the game to do that? DANTEZ WALTON: Coach brought it to our attention early in our game plan that we need to attack the glass defensively and offensively So, I just tried to keep that on my mind heavy and it paid off Q

Coach, what was the message in the locker room with the season you guys had and now those seniors moving on {wharks} was the message after a loss like this? {Janchts} one game doesn't define us We had an unbelievable season We'll appreciative We're not sitting here today without {drew} {mack} dawned and eye say a Robinson and the contributions they {maid} {(Mark)} {(Mark)} {(Mark)} {(Mark)} really, the brand ever Kentucky is really something that recognizes a championship program

We're going to put ourselves in a position to advance in the NCAA Tournament Hopefully get better seeds doing what we're doing The message was thankful, grateful to two seniors and the challenge of keep getting back here to the guys that are returning which we have a pretty large group returning And just for me, my gratitude towards them, really was limit biggest thing You know, we went through the course in February we were 4 and 4 and things could have gone either way

{These} guys made the decision they were going to finish the season and be the team that they were supposed to be and I just told them hutch I appreciated them for that THE MODERATOR: Anything else for the gentlemen from northern Kentucky? Okay Thank you very much Best
