And one day maybe we solve the problem of cancer and we make it a chronic disease My name is Roel Sijstermans

I'm Head of IT at the Netherlands Cancer Institute We combine a cancer clinic and a research institute together to solve the cancer problem in the 21st century Every discovery in curing cancer is a very long chain of small discoveries I'm Bram van den Broek, I work here as a senior postdoc Here you see a piece of cancer tissue and this is how the image comes from the microscope

And when we do the deconvolution, you see that the image becomes much sharper and there's more contrast So this is only a small part of the image but we have huge data sets that need to be deconvolved That's why we need more and more computing power What happens is that researchers during the day, they make images on the microscopes and then they will just put them in a cue And in the evening our platform will speed up machines, which can handle the cue and start processing the images

My name is Mark Platte, I'm working here as an IT architect Based on VMware technology, we are incorporating a whole new workspace which we also try to use for research And that's next to the virtual desktops that we're giving during normal office hours And in the evening we see that there is a drop in use of two-thirds of the population so we get a lot more desktops free which are not used And those we're actually using now for research capacity

The challenge for me as an IT department is to do a lot more self-service for our users because everyone is waiting on IT One of the nice things about working with the new technology is that we also went back to the people who need to work with it, so the researchers as well And where you first saw the I&A department was always seen as a department which was basically being a roadblock for them, we're now having nice discussions again about how we can actually be a partner of them, help them with their research, and try to make things better together as partners To be able to make a difference is nice But in the end, what keeps me going is solving the little puzzles and seeing things that people have not seen before

And one day maybe we solve the problem of cancer and we make it a chronic disease
