You get a call claiming your computer or mobile device is dangerously ill and needs an immediate, costly cure Don't buy it

Here are five ways to avoid a tech-support scam Hang up the phone if you get an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be a tech-support provider for your software or computer Make sure your security software and operating system are up to date Use up-to-date antivirus software to regularly scan your computer for malware Don't call the number in a pop-up virus alert

Real warnings from your operating system or antivirus program will not ask you to call anyone for support Don't buy security software from a company you don't know If the name is unfamiliar, do an internet search to see if it has been linked to scams For more scam prevention tips, go to aarporg/FraudWatchNetwork

And make sure to tune in to RFD-TV the third Thursday of each month for "Rural America Live" with AARP
